Why Am I Being Charged For An Ambulance

Beaver Emergency Medical Services charges the government regulated rate for ambulance services in the province to offset our operational expenses. The Government of Alberta provides significant funding to provide emergency medical services to Albertans even though the Canada Health Act does not require the Government of Alberta to provide ambulance services as an insured service. The amount patients are charged for emergency health services is only a small portion of the actual cost of the service provided.

How Can I Pay My Ambulance Bill

Bills can be paid in person at our Tofield Station with cash, cheque, debit or credit card.
e-Transfers are accepted at: admin@beaver-ems.com
Credit card payments can also be taken over the phone or online via our secure payment processing link below

As of January 1, 2015, the ambulance fees established by Alberta Health Services are:
  • Response and assessment fee $250.00
  • Response, assessment, and transport fee $385.00

Who Pays My Ambulance Bill

Payment for ambulance services is the responsibility of the patient. Some of our patients are exempt from paying for ambulance services, but may still receive a bill if we do not have the proper information. It is the patients responsibility to communicate the required information to our billing department if this occurs. More information can be found on our website for this scenario:

  • Alberta Senior Citizens- (age 65 and older) are entitled to coverage for ambulance services. The Coverage for Seniors program by Alberta Health is administered through Alberta Blue Cross. Please contact our administration office (780)662-6352 if you have Blue Cross coverage. Read more or enroll in the Coverage for Seniors plan.
  • Automotive Insurance- Patients who utilize our services related to a motor vehicle collision may be eligible to have the ambulance bill paid for by the automotive insurance coverage. Please contact the insurance company for more information as to whether this is an option. Coverage is often similar to Health Care Benefits.
  • First Nations Clients- Health Canada pays the user fee for emergency medical services for First Nations people. Additional information on Indian Status can be obtained from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, learn more.
  • Patients with Health Care Benefits- Health Care benefits, such as those sometimes provided by an employer, or purchased independently through companies such as Alberta Blue Cross, Great West, Manulife, etc. may provide coverage for ambulance services. Patients must contact their provider to determine if this is the scenario. Unfortunately Beaver Emergency Medical Services is unable to direct bill most insurance providers and arrangements must be made by the patient and the insurance company for payment. Additionally, most providers do not offer 100% coverage for our services and the remaining balance is the responsibility of the patient.
  • Income Support - Alberta Human Services pays the cost of emergency ambulance services for Albertans receiving health benefits through Income Support, Adult Health Benefits or Alberta Child Health Benefits. Please visit the Alberta Human Services Website for further information on financial support.
