Frequently Asked Questions

Who pays for a ride in an ambulance?

Although members of the public in Alberta receive most health care services through their Alberta Health Care Insurance, there is a cost for Emergency Medical Services. The coverage provided by Alberta Health Care does not usually cover costs incurred by treatment and transportation in an ambulance.

Many Albertans are shocked when they learn that they may need to pay directly for ambulance services. It is not required for Albertans to carry extra health insurance for ambulance costs, although many people do have coverage through Blue Cross or private insurance plans. Interhospital transfers are covered by the health region where the trip originates.

Residents on Alberta Social Services receive full ambulance cost coverage. Blue Cross andother plans generally reimburse a large portion of costs.
